Written Law - The Final Law
What may have slipped by the minds of most people is that the Catholic Church (and before it the Jewish Nation which the Church is the continuation of) is the first government in the history of the world to have written law. No priest or Bishop can tell me to do something that is contrary to the written law. No priest or Bishop can just make up orders that are not within his rights under the written law. All it remains for me is to know that law to be obedient or not to my superiors. My obedience is first and foremost to the written law of the Church. Almost nothing that I must be obedient to is not written down. There is no excuse for not knowing the laws of God as God, Himself, has written them by the hands of men.
There have been times in history where there was a great Catholic Government and even times when the entire civilized world was under a good Catholic King. However, this never lasted. Under Great kings (like Constantine, Charlemagne, Pepin, Saint Luis, Philip the Great, Isabel of Spain, Charles Von Hapsburg, and many more) people have been happy and Nations and Empires have been good. This does not last however. After everyone of these great kings came bad kings.
Power corrupts and total power corrupts totally. The law of Moses, the Jewish Nation under the Judges, the Catholic Church, and the constitution of the United States were governments of written law. The United States originally wrote a constitution in order to avoid the very thing we said above - that sooner or later rulers would corrupt but a constitution would not. Now only did they write a constitutional republic but they wrote it in such a way that no man had any real power. This was called the check and balance system. The system worked perfectly under written law until in the 1950s when it changed from a constitutional government to a democracy. From then on it went down hill and in time will fail.
There is no such thing as equality and there never will be. People are different, some are smarter than others, some work harder, some are wiser, some are stronger, some are thrifty, some can suffer and some cannot. People are not equal in authority and dignity either, the priest is higher than the King, the King higher than the men, the men higher than the women, the women higher than the children. This chain of command was designed by God and this creates the peace of a good social order. In spite of these differences in talent and authority under God, all must have the same opportunity under the law and the same protection under the law. Under a constitutional government no king will be allowed to kill or to steal and no government official will have special privileges.
