Regarding their appeal to past popes, let us read (Unam Sanctam, 1302, Pope Boniface VIII). "it is absolutely necessary for the salvation of every human creature to be subject to the Roman Pontiff" (Unam Sanctam, 1302, Pope Boniface VIII). "He who obeys the whole law, yet offends in one point, is guilty in all." (James 2:10) In "Cum muta sint" Pope Saint Leo XIII, 1882, states that one is sinning who appeals to past or future popes in order to justify being disobedient to the authority of the present Pope, "since the Church is One, her Head is One, her Government is One."
As you will see by the following report based on their own writings, The Knights of Saint John not only do not have Papal authority, they do not even believe in the authority of this pope and as such are Sedivicantists - a belief that the Seat of Peter is Empty. As we have written in other reports, it is not possible for the seat of Peter to ever be Empty, not now or ever in the future. See our report on Sedevacanti and those who promote it at www.unitypublishing.com/godskingdom/Sedivicanti.html . They also believe that Vatican II is totally a heresy, which is also not possible, even though it was infiltrated by Protestants and Masons, as we have already written about in our section on the Liturgy. But proof of the pope's infallibility is not the issue here, (the pope is infallible in matters of faith and morals but not in canons - or the discipline of the Church). At issue here is - "At what point can we disobey a pope?" The answer is - "Never!" We can openly state that the pope is wrong on issues that are not faith and morals (as Cardinal Ratzinger has done in saying that turning the priest around in the Mass was a mistake or as I have done in stating that communion in the hand is a mistake), but even then we do not have the right to disobey him. There must remain order in the Church, and that order and unity comes from obedience. See http://www.unitypublishing.com/liturgy/CatholicRights&Obligations.html
Traditionalists seem to be very holy and traditional, but they fall short on the most
important point of tradition in the Church. That tradition is OBEDIENCE. St. Thomas
Aquinas: "Objection 3 Whether obedience belongs to religious perfection? Reply to
Objection 3 --- they are nevertheless bound to obey the Sovereign pontiff, not only in
matters affecting all in common, but also in those which pertain specially to religious
discipline."
St. John of the Cross: "Never consider your superior as less than if he were God, no
matter who the superior is, because to you he stands in the place of God."
St. Pascal Baylon: " Obedience comes first; devotion must take second place."
St. Teresa of Avila: "I believe that since Satan sees there is no road that leads
more quickly to the highest perfection than this of obedience, he suggests many
difficulties under the color of some good, and makes it distasteful; let people look well
into it and they will see plainly that I am telling the truth. Wherein lies the highest
perfection? It is clear that it does not lie in interior delights, not in great raptures,
not in visions, not in the spirit of prophecy, but in the conformity of our will to the
will of God, so that there shall be nothing we know He wills that we do not will ourselves
with our whole will, and accept the bitter as joyfully as the sweet, knowing it to be His
Majestys will."
What is Gods will? "Whatever you loose on earth, I will loose in Heaven."
The reason I have made these points about the authority of the pope and Sedificanti is
that friends of mine went looking for a place to go to a Tridentine Mass, something I
always advise if you have children. They found a place called a priory run by the Order of
St. John of Jerusalem. The priest asked them if they exclusively went to the Tridentine
Mass. My friends said no, but did go the majority of the time to the Latin Mass. The
Priest of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem, Knights of St. John, then told them
that they could go to Mass, but they could only receive Holy Communion if they went to
Confession to this priest first and confessed that they had committed a mortal sin of
sacrilege by attending the Novus Ordo Mass. This priest also told them that they
wouldn't be able to go back to the Novus Ordo Mass ever again without committing a
sacrilege. As this point I was asked to investigate this order. I had known a little about
them since a good friend of mine was a knight in the order. But that was all I knew at the
time. I know much more now.
The Knights of St. John say that they are directly under papal authority. This was my
first confusion, since the pope himself offers the Novus Ordo Mass. I had to ask myself if
the pope, himself, (according to them) is committing a mortal sin by offering the Novus
Ordo Mass, as he does everyday.
My friends did not go to Mass with the Knights of St. John, as they did not believe what the priest told them. The idea that attending a Novus Ordo Mass did not fit into their idea of a "mortal sin" even though they attended the Latin Mass when ever they could. When they could not attend a Latin Mass, they attended a Novus Ordo Mass, and this Knight of St. John were telling them that they were committing a mortal sin of Sacrilege by attending the Novus Ordo Mass.
This priest of the Knights of St. John told my friends that if they went back to the Novus Ordo after confessing, etc. they would be intentionally committing a mortal sin and would be "excommunicated". Excommunicated by whom? They have no bishops and no pope, and it is hard to see if they even have priests, since according to a canon law that goes back to the Canons of Nicea "no priest has any authority to offer Mass without his bishops approval, and the Nights have no bishop and as far as I can prove, no priests.
The so-called priest said that the Knights of St. John are directly under the pope and do not report to any bishops. If they are under the pope, where is their paperwork to prove it. As you will see by their own writings they are not talking about this pope but a pope dead for hundreds of years, and no proof that they are even in that order.
There is a book carried by TAN publishers called "Is the Order of St. John
Masonic?" by Fr. James Wathen, OSJ, where it is described that this book was
written to refute Dr. Pro's article to that effect. I do
not know who Dr. Pro is or where to find this article, nor to I believe that the Knights
are Masonic. But this book, as described by TAN, goes on to describe the history of the
Knights Hospitaller (Knights of Malta). It further states that the Knights "remain
the only exempt religious order in the Church, as far as we know--they can operate outside
the authority of the local bishops and possess many ecclesiastical privileges that make
them potentially a powerful force in today's Church." This is not true since they
do not have any authority from the pope and the only order of Knights that does is
headquartered in Rome - The Knights of Malta - as we will prove.
It is also interesting to note that Fr. Wathen also wrote a book called "The Great
Sacrilege" also carried by TAN, a critique on the New Mass. He wrote it in 1972. In
September of 1999, a local church in MD had Gerry Keane, author of "Creation
Rediscovered" scheduled to talk. TAN publishes this book. The man in charge of
publicity for the talk contacted Tom Nelson to see if Mr. Keane's books could be sent
ahead for sale at the talk. Tom Nelson basically started an inquisition with this man
about where he attended Mass and the validity/invalidity of the Novus Ordo Mass. The
publicity man almost pulled out of the talk. They had to get a third party involved to
smooth things back over. Tom Nelson sent the books, and the talk went on. I know this
because my friend was helping to promote the talk. Tom Nelson also carries books like
"The Problems with the New Mass" and "The Problems with the Prayers of the
New Mass" but he does not carry anything on the documents of Vatican II.
Tan does such great work for the Church, and over the years I have bought almost every book they publish, some that would not see the light of day without Tan Book, but Tom Nelson, who owns Tan Book and Publishers, belongs to The Order of St. John. He may or may not know that the Knights are not a true order, but what I do know from face to face conversations is that he only attends the Tridentine Mass, and I assume it is by the Knights of St. John.
I have supported (and still do) organizations that promote the legitimate Tridentine Mass such as http://www.ecclesiadei.org/ and organizations that openly state that the new Mass is a mistake and that much of what has been done in the past 30 years is not good for the Church such as http://www.crc-internet.org/, the Catholic Counter Reformation in France, and http://www.roman-catholic.com Roman Catholic Replies who argues that the next pope will restore all things regarding the Mass. But none of these people go so far as to say that the New Mass is not valid. They may say that it is not reverent, as I also say, and even when said by a great priest like my pastor, it is not said as well as a Tridentine Mass could be said. But the Knights have gone too far for me, Mr. Nelson.
IS A TYPE OF LITURGY A MATTER OF FAITH OR MORALS
No! And my arguments are that none of the early Church Liturgies were Tridentine or
even close. They had different Liturgies in Jerusalem, Alexandria, Rome, Persia, and
Edessa. The Liturgy of James the Apostle (Jerusalem) has a different Canon than the
Liturgy of Mark, Clement, Chrysostom, Basil, and the two of Peter.
The truth is that many of the Traditionalist Masses are illegal. Oh! Yes, they are licit,
and it is the real Body of Christ. Even in the Greek Orthodox and Old Roman Catholic
Churches the consecration is real because, unlike Protestants, they have Apostolic
Succession. But those saying and those attending these Masses by choice are committing
Sins of disobedience against the Pope, the doctrine of the Church, and the first councils
of the Church, especially of Nice.
(De fide) Fundamentals of Catholic Dogma - Ott Page 278 "Only that Eucharist is
regarded as valid and legal, that is consummated under the Bishop or by one authorized by
him." By who - Tan Books?
Who then is in the true Church of Christ? --- the Catholics under the Pope of Rome, the
Traditionalists under the Pius X Society, the Traditionalists, who are freelancing away
from their bishops and who have left the Pius X Society because they were too liberal, or
the Orthodox, who claim to be more traditional than the Pope?
There are two points here that I would like to make regarding which one of these groups is
the true Church of Christ: one is the dying statement of St. Ignatius, who was
taught by St. John, the Apostle. In his letter to the Philadelphians he pleads,
"I exhort you to have but one Eucharist, for there is one flesh of the Lord Jesus
Christ; and His blood which was shed for us is one; one loaf also is broken to all the
communicants, and one up is distributed among them all; there is but one altar for the
whole Church, and one bishop, --- and one faith, and one baptism; and one Church which the
holy apostles established from one end of the earth to the other --- For the word is not
mine, but Gods, give heed to the bishop --- Do nothing without the bishop;
keep your bodies as the temples of God; love unity; avoid divisions; be the followers of
Jesus Christ, even as He is of His Father." [To the Smyrnaeans he wrote:] "Let
no man do anything connected with the Church without the bishop. Let that be deemed a
proper Eucharist, which is administered either by the bishop. Or by one to whom he has
entrusted it. Wherever the bishop shall appear, there let the multitude of the people
also be; even as, wherever Jesus Christ is, there is the Catholic Church. It is not lawful
without the bishop either to baptize or to celebrate a love-feast; but whatsoever he shall
approve of, that is also pleasing to God, so that everything that is done may be secure
and valid. --- He who honors the bishop has been honored by God; he
who does anything without the knowledge of the bishop, does in reality serve the
devil."
I think we have made the point from St. Ignatius that independent priests going around
giving the so-called Traditional Mass without a bishops permission are sinning and
those attending these Masses are sinning. That does not mean that the Mass is illicit,
only illegal. If a priest has his bishop's approval let him show you his
"celebrat" and if he cannot, how do you even know that he is a priest?
Now let us look at those groups who have a bishop. St. Irenaeus, pupil of Polycarp,
writes: "For it is a matter of necessity that every Church should agree with this
Church, on account of its preeminent authority, that is, the faithful everywhere, inasmuch
as the apostolic tradition has been preserved continuously by those faithful men who exist
everywhere." Then listing the popes down to his day, he goes on to say, "Suppose
there arise a dispute relative to some important question among us, should we not have
recourse to the most ancient Churches with which the apostles held constant intercourse,
and learn from them what is certain and clear in regard to the present question?"
It appears to me, although maybe I am too stupid to understand, that if there is a dispute
between bishops regarding anything of importance, the Bishop of Rome is the final law of
the Church. That being the case, all other arguments regarding other Popes or Trent or
Tradition or whatever, are void.
Canon 13 of Chalcedon: "Strange and unknown clergymen
without letters commendatory from their own Bishop, are absolutely prohibited from
officiating in another city." Today these letters are called
"Celebrats".
Let us consider two Papal Bulls: "Quo Primum" by Pope St. Pius V and "Novus
Ordo Missae" by Pope Paul VI. Both begin and end in the exact same words. They are
identical in the canonical formula, that is: Superscription, salutation, signature, and
Bullae.
Regarding ex-cathedra, it must be noted that we must subject ourselves to the Pope in
matters of liturgical discipline just as we do in matters of faith. Obedience to the Pope
is obedience to Jesus Christ, and without it, there is no merit in the sight of God. Obedience
has nothing to do with an ex-cathedra document. We must be obedient in all, except sin, to
all in authority.
St. Robert Bellarimine states: "The Pope, when determining anything in a doubtful
manner, whether by himself or with his own particular Council, whether it is possible for
him to err or not, is to be obeyed by all the faithful." I would like to know
why no one complained when Pope John XXIII ordered the name of St. Joseph to be included
in the Canon of the Mass, despite the fact that Pius VII and Leo XIII had refused to do
the same thing.
Even St. Pius V permitted alternate Roman rites, such as the Ambrosian, Mozarabic,
Dominican, Carmelite, Carthusian, Lyons, etc. In the new Sacramentary of the Novus Ordo
you will find that all priests are still granted the privilege of offering this new rite
completely in its Latin formula, which is printed in the back of the book.
That being the case, what authority does the Knights of St. John have to say that one is
sinning by attending the New Mass? It is my opinion that the Knights of St. John and those
who belong to them which I hate to report include some people in Our Lady of the Rosary
Home School and Thomas Nelson, are no longer members of the Holy Roman Catholic Church.
You can make you own conclusions because what follows is their own defense taken from
their own website. In their own words with our comments in [brackets].
THE KNIGHTS OF SAINT JOHN'S OWN DEFENCE:
"The major and all-important claim of the Order of St. John is that it is the genuine descendant of the ancient Order of Knights Hospitallers, the last of the three great military orders of the Church. This claim, for which evidence is abundant, remains unimpaired if every one of the Knights and Ladies is a rogue and rascal; nor is it strengthened or weakened by the current opinion of Vatican officials (the Roman Pontiff included) or groups of bishops regarding it; it is no less true because of the vaunted claims of envious rivals, no matter how large or small their numbers, whether they be Italian, Maltese, rich or powerful or whatever, simply because this is a matter of historical fact and nothing else. Those who mean to disprove the legitimacy of the Order of St. John must produce credible historical documentation; not sour-mouthed complaints form disenchanted malcontents. [But the so-called knights do not have to produce any historical documentation other than their own word for it.]
--- priests, having entered the Order to be free to fulfill the oaths of their priesthood, may find a fruitful and wonderful apostolate, in no way trammeled by the threats and treachery of their former ecclesiastical superiors, who now teach "doctrines and precepts of men" [In other words a priest is asked to leave his bishop and violate the canons of the Church. Not very traditional!]
Pope Pascal II personally sanctioned the Orders nature and purpose, and established its preeminence by his Papal Bull of March 15, 1113. (A Papal Bull is a formal document or command regarding a most important matter or solemn occasion. It carries the official bulla or seal of the Church bearing the representations of Saints Peter and Paul, along with the name of the reigning Pontiff.) In this proclamation Pascal II granted the Order special privileges, and further declared that the Order "shall now be placed, and shall forever remain, under the protection of the Apostolic See, and under that of the blessed apostle Peter."
The Order has been known by various names over the centuries Brothers of the Hospital, Hospitallers of Jerusalem, Knight Hospitallers of Jerusalem, Order of the Hospital, Knights of Saint John, knights of Jerusalem, Knights of Cyprus, Knights of Rhodes, Knights of Malta, Order of Malta, Knights of Russia, and The Sovereign Order. These names often reflected the site of the Knights homeland at various periods in the Orders glorious history: Jerusalem 1048-1291, Cyprus 1291-1310, Rhodes 1310-1523, Malta 1530-1798, and Russia 1798-1917. The headquarters of the Sovereign Order is now in the United States.
To place in perspective the devotion and courage of the Knights of the Sovereign Order, let us paraphrase from a statement on Sir Thomas A. Nelson, O.S.J., the founder and president of TAN Books and Publishers: It is essential that the world never erase from its memory those thousands of glorious martyrs of the Order of Saint John who died defending the Church and Christendom, often against hopeless odds, often in little known and less remember places, sent by the Grand Master, or the Pope himself, to fight the common enemy and stop the advancing tide of Islam time and again defending and saving Christian Europe, while Christian monarchs many times were fighting among themselves.
Although some historians, church leaders and so-called authorities on chivalry have lost the whereabouts of the Order, or have blindly or jealously denied its survival, it must be emphasized that the Sovereign Order never died, was never suppressed (being Sovereign it cannot be) and has never been lost to history. The continuity and validity of the true, historic order continued through its tenure in Russia; and in the decades since 1917, it has been preserved through its Hereditary Knights who remain the guardians of the Order and the foundation of its government. As evidence of that sacred guardianship, the formal government of the Order was officially reconstituted under the authority of the Hereditary Knights during the period 1984-91, and the first Chapter General 1798 was convened in the United States of America on September 27-29, 1991. At this historic event a comprehensive, codified constitution was unanimously adopted, and a Grand Master formally elected. Sir John Grady, M.D., O.S.J., a Hereditary Knight Commander who had been selected the Orders executive officer to direct the reconstitution of the Order, and who was the principal author of the Orders new constitution, was elected Grand Master by a nearly unanimous vote of the Chapter General, the first to be so chosen since the Orders move to Saint Petersburg in 1798.
Other critics erroneously or purposely transfer the historical continuity, rights and privileges of the historic Order of Saint John to the Papal Order (S.M.O.M.) which was founded in the 19th century. The Papal Order is now widely recognized as a valid order of state, and it is to be commended for its dedication to the Church and its generous works of charity. However, it was started in the 19th century by several opportunistic Italian "knights" who falsely claimed to be the historic Order. Due to the confusion of the times this group received Vatican approval as a "charitable association" circa 1830, while the true Order of Saint John was solidly settled in Russia. [At a time when Russia was under the Russian Orthodox Church who protected that branch of the Knights - but even then these knights cannot prove a link of any kind to them.] Even the name of the Papal Order (Sovereign Military Order of Malta) is a misnomer. It is not sovereign, it has never been a military order, it has never engaged in a single battle, and it did not originate in Malta. By no stretch of the imagination can the S.M.O.M honestly claim to be the historic Sovereign Order of Saint John of Jerusalem.
If people want to reject ideals, or morality, or religion, or authority, or even recorded history, they will find a "reason" to do so. Experience demonstrates that men often create their own confusion and skepticism for various personal reasons.
The Order of Saint John needs no apology or defense. Its magnificent history and wondrous achievement speak for themselves. Its rights and privileges are secured by the historical recognition of Emperors, Kings, and Heads of State; by Papal Bulls, Concordats with the Church, and the Proclamations of grateful Pontiffs; and by formal Treaties with nations and empires. The Order stands firmly as a noble, sovereign state; a venerable religious order long known as The Religion; and a military order of knighthood loved and feared as the Defenders of Christendom.
It is sufficient to say that the true Sovereign Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, that most famous of all orders of chivalry, that most noble and militant order of the Church, is alive and well, confident and courageous, and once again in resurgence! [By their own words they cannot prove a link to any past order and cannot produce one document proving they are knights of any king other than simply making it up out of the sky.]

[The following are the words of the Knights of St. John regarding the Mass except for those in brackets, which are Unity Publishing comments.]
"Attendance at the "New Mass" [meaning the Novus Order] is a mortal sin. This statement is strong enough, but not the whole story. The following principles derive from it:
1. It is wrong to receive Holy Communion at such "masses," or to receive "hosts" which have been "consecrated" at them. The same principle applies whether one is well or sick, or even in danger of death. It should be understood that the main issue here is not whether these "hosts" are validly consecrated, but whether they come from the sacrilegious "New Mass."
2. All churches where the "New Mass" is "celebrated" must be regarded as desecrated sanctuaries, in that "impious and sordid actions" have been committed there. (Canon 1172, Par. 1.3). Therefore, the True Mass should not be offered in them, nor should anyone attend the True Mass offered in them.
[To the Knights of St. John's way of thinking, even a Tridentine Mass offered by a true priest under obedience to his Bishop is a sinful Mass - that leaves only the Knights Masses as legitimate - does that make you wonder who's God they serve?]
Further, other services which are held in such churches must be avoided if they have any connection with the "celebration" of the "New Mass." These include Benediction, Confirmations, marriages, funerals, etc. It would seem that the only acceptable reasons one might have for entering these churches at all is to attend a Baptism or go to Confession. At this statement, some may find themselves bestirred as they have not been from the beginning of this writing until now. They will say: "Now, this is too much! We may not even attend weddings and funerals in our own churches? Why, we have always been allowed to go to Protestant churches for such occasions!" My answer is: Eureka! Now you are catching on! It is permissible to go to Protestant churches for social reasons. But such services, no matter how greatly they resemble it, and no matter how dissident their doctrine, are not to be regarded as irreverent Mimicries of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Of set purpose, Protestant services are not and explicitly claim not to be the Eternal Sacrifice of the Mass. Perhaps before we are finished here, the meaning of the Revolution will have become clearer. For, truly, this is our situation: Through the "New Mass," those who treasure the Faith and who fear God have been virtually excluded from their own places of worship, just as Christ Himself, His Mother, and the angels and saints have been rudely cast out. Surely we should not be surprised. Did not our Divine Redeemer warn us: "The servant is not greater than his master. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you." (Jn. 15:20).
3. For the protection of ones orthodoxy, it is necessary to have nothing to do with the perjured ministers of the "New Religion" [meaning the Roman Catholic Church] who prefer being "presidents" to being priests. It is obvious that they cannot be trusted. They have compromised their priesthood, their honor, their faith for a little security they are like walking dead men, disease-bearers. They will tell anyone anything to be allowed to remain on the "inside," to be assured of a place to stay, and to be thought obedient. Particularly, these parasitic pariahs must not be allowed to influence out children. It is difficult enough to rear children in these days without having all ones efforts ruined by the likes of them.
4. There is no reason in the world why one should feel obliged to continue to give money to support the: "New Church." [Meaning the Roman Catholic Church] In fact, it is morally wrong to do so. For it benefits the enemies of Christ, contribute to the strengthening of their hold on the Church, and help them to perpetuate their tyranny. I can think of one thing more foolish than the foregoing: that is to continue to ask these presidents" to "say" "mass" for ones intentions. Rather, if you have mistakenly given stipends for this person, ask for them back.
5. Children should be removed immediately from those parish schools whose churches permit the "New Mass," no matter how "decently" it is "said." These are literally "schools of scandal" where the doctrines of the Revolution are systematically inculcated into their minds. Some will say: "But Catholic schools are better than public schools." In this respect which takes precedence over all others they are not. For all their corruption, no state schools (yet) have pseudo-religious ceremonies in which the Mass is buffooned. If one had his child in a state-owned school in which the Catholic Mass were travestied as a matter of daily schedule, would he not be bound to take his child from such a place, even at the risk of going to prison. We are in the midst of the Revolution. For this reason parents should not be surprised to find their own schools forbidden to them.
Some will say: "It is not my responsibility to decide about the Mass; it is the priests and the bishops and the Popes. If they do not provide the Mass, they will have to suffer for it." Such talk bespeaks a jaded spirit and is very common among lukewarm Catholics. This is a Protestant attitude. It bases everything on the avoidance of sin and the achieving of salvation. Our religion has a higher motivation. The main concern of this writing is not "who is guilty and who is going to pay," but the proper adoration of God and the defense of His honor. God knows well the clergy will suffer for their great betrayal and their niggardly cowardice. We can only pray that our beloved Lord will have mercy on them, so that they may turn and make amends before it is too late. It seems safe to say, they will be converted as soon as the people require it of them and prove themselves worthy of the Mass, so painlessly relinquished. But the answer to the objection given above is that, if the clergy provide a sacrilege instead of a Mass, the faithful may not substitute the one for the other fulfilling their obligation of worshiping Almighty God by insulting Him just because that is what is scheduled for Sunday. If the father hand his son a stone instead of a loaf, is the son going to eat it? (Mt. 7:9).
Some may say: "I would have discontinued going to the New Mass long ago if it were not for the children. How am I going to teach the children to go to church unless I take them?" This is neat logic. You have no food for your children, so, in order that they may not forget how to eat, you will give them poison! It is this kind of warped reasoning which has prepared us all for our present plight. Instead of facing up to the fact that we are in the very midst of the Revolution, these people would hand their children over to ravagers, almost out of spite. They will submit their children to be scandalized so that those priests whose responsibility it is to instruct them will come to deserve their damnation! Such an attitude is reminiscent of the harlot who, after having lost her own child, wished King Solomon to slice her neighbors child in two. (3 Kgs. 3:24-25). Let such unworthy, lazy parents as this be assured they will have a warm, cozy bed waiting for them in Hell. It should not have to be said, but I want to be sure to say it: This kind of talk treats children as if they were no more than dumb animals. Would it ever occur to such parents to tell their children with truth and proper earnestness of the times they live in, to prepare them for even greater tests of their faith, and to arm them with the sword of the Spirit, lest when the challenge comes, their children be incapable even recognizing its demands, much less fulfilling them. What do parents think their counterparts must do in countries where Communism has shown its full power and hatefulness?
Some may wish to accuse me of commanding the faithful to leave the Catholic Church.
[That is exactly what the Knights of St. John are doing, because where the Pope is - there is the Catholic Church and where he is not - there is no Catholic Church - and as Pope Clement states "anything done without the Bishop is from the devil."]
By no means! The point being made here is that Catholics have no choice but to withdraw from the pernicious Burlesque called the "New Mass" and to keep themselves clear of the sin and scandal involved in having any part in it. The obvious implication is that the people must demand that this hideous Distortion be cleansed from the House of God; they must turn out the "priests of Baal;" and they must arrange for Masses of reparation to be offered immediately is not soon enough. The faithful must demand Catholic bishops for their dioceses, Catholic priests for their parishes, and Catholic teachers for their schools. If the people do not bring such a restoration about, let them not be surprised if God does it directly. But if they wait for God to do it, let them expect that He will count them party to the Crime, for so, as of now, most of them are. Surely, there is no need to remind anyone that the wrath of God is terrible indeed; only a fool would provoke it upon himself.
Below I will say what must be done by those who recognize the correctness of the preceding onerous injunctions and who determine that they have no choice but to obey them. But first I must offer a word of advice to those of you who think serving with Christs ragtag remnant will be too strong for your blood, or to ignominious. You have, of course, two other choices. I urge you to come to a decision as quickly as possible for your own peace of mind. You can either give up your religion altogether, (as many have done) in a spirit of small-souled indignation and disloyalty, since it is, after all, unreasonable to expect you to do more for the Church now than you ever have or ever intended. Or, you can go along with the "New Religion," yield to he subversion of your own faith and that of others, thus helping the cause of "peace," and continue "dutifully" to attend the "New Mass," thus adding your voice to the communal blasphemy of the Divine Majesty and the Holy Mass. (You really would be missed if you were not there, you know.) I say again: make a decision. And should you thus decide to surrender without a struggle, because this is surely the easiest and most "respectable" approach to your problem, I have further advice to give. By all means, do not merely surrender. Rather, join the Revolution, throw yourself into the effort, and dedicate yourself to its total program. Be either hot or cold in this present contest. Either take the side of the true Church, or take the side of those who intend to destroy it. In other words, play the game, win or lose. I so advise you because this is the way our Lord would advise you, He finding sluggishness and mediocrity and neutrality more contemptible than open hatred and hostility. (Apoc. 3:16).
If you do decide to continue in your new-found allegiance, I urge you to make the most of it. If you are going to abandon your faith, well then, what are you afraid of? Cast off all your "medieval moral inhibitions" and enjoy being "free." You are living as if the old rules still bound you, while you participate in the "rites" of your "liberation." Does that make sense? Look at all your brothers and sisters (look at the nuns); you see they have caught the spirit. If you must pay the bills for the "New Religion," you might as well get something out of it. I say again, jump in with both feet, do not look back, and "live it up!" In this way, you will have no complaints or regrets ever after, nor feel cheated when it is all over. Enjoy the Revolutions current ascendancy and thrilling high ride. Enjoy the euphoria of living on extravagant promises and utopian dreams. Eat, drink, and be merry while you revel in the exciting anticipation of the coming New Age.
But whatever you do, do not be silly enough to imagine that there is anything at all in the promises for you personally, either on this earth or in the life to come. That would be to miss the point altogether. Whether you are one of the enthusiastic soldiers of the Revolution or just one of its harmless serialized slaves, you must understand that the Revolution promises you nothing. You have never heard it promise you virtue, nor union with God, nor final repentance, nor heavenly beatitude. In return for your renunciation of Catholicism and of your own person, the Revolution promises you only a Cause, and the final exaltation of the Community. This is what the Revolution says, and this is what it means. In this respect, at least, it is honest. I tell you these things, that when finally the Church revives, and with one mighty play, scores a great victory, you will not have missed your part of the fun.
Now for those of you who are still with me, who will dare to stand with Mary, the Sorrowful Mother, at the foot of Christs Cross, I have these further instructions. You are wondering, I know, about your obligation to attend Holy Mass. well, you must do all in your power to attend the True Mass as often as possible. There can be no sin in being unable to get to one, though it is understandable that greater effort must be put forth during these days than formerly.
[In other words if you cannot go to the Mass of the Knights of St. John, you do not have to go to Mass at all.]
"For this is a very evil time." (Mich. 2:3). You must band together, obtain places which can be made to serve for chapels, and have priests come to offer the Holy Sacrifice provided, I must emphasize, all things are done in accordance with the Code of Canon Law and with suitable decorum. Faithful priests and faithful people must find each other.

The True Knights of St. John in Rome
&
Its Lawsuit with John L. GradyOther National Associations soon started their own activities and contributed further to the Order's good works. In 1886 the Spanish Association was born followed in 1891 by the French Association and in 1899 by the Portuguese one. In time, all countries having groups, of Knights gave life to their own Associations, of which there are thirty-eight at present. In accordance with the legal system of the territory concerned the Associations are accorded treatment based upon the type of relationship
The Association of Italian Knights (ACISMOM) has, since its foundation, achieved very
important recognition which mirrors Italy's relationship with the Order. The Italian
Association of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta carries out its traditional
activities in the field of charity and welfare through the creation, organization and
administration of hospitals, nursing homes, hospitals for the chronically ill, sanitary
departments, surgeries, anti-diabetic centres, and laboratories of analysis. Faithful to
its hospitaller vocation but never forgetting the past, at the moment of its foundation
the Association gave life, through many conventions and agreements with the Ministry of
Works and later with the Ministry of Defense, to a Military Corps, to be employed in
relief operations in case of war or natural calamity.
Occasions during which the Knights could demonstrate the efficiency of this organization
were not lacking. In 1908 the earthquake in Messina for the first time engaged the
Military Corps which intervened with very considerable employment of men and machinery.
In 1911, during the war between Italy and Turkey, ACISMOM mobilized the Military
Corps and in a short time prepared and equipped the hospital ship "Regina
Margherita" which, during seven voyages, reached the Ports of Tripoli, Derna,
Benghazi and Tobruk, and brought home 1162 wounded and sick soldiers. The first World War
witnessed the Corps on the front line. From the start of military operations four trains,
each with 306 beds, evacuated the hospitals in the war zone. The four trains gave
assistance to the French and British expeditionary forces in Italy and to the Italian
expeditionary force in France. During 641 voyages, the trains ran 483,948 km carrying
85,784 wounded and 62,232 sick. For more than recognition which mirrors Italy's
relationship with the Order. The Italian Association of the Sovereign Military Order of

85,784 wounded and 62,232 sick. For more than forty months, eight first aid stations on
the front line were the basis of medical assistance that, by the end of the hostilities
would have dealt with 87,390 visits
These figures speak for themselves especially when taking into account that ACISMOM had
organized and was managing two hospitals at that same time. In 1940 the Association of
Italian Knights mobilized all its sanitary services and put two hospitals, some first aid
stations and three hospital trains at the disposal of the Italian army. The trains carried
out 79 voyages in Italy, Croatia, Germany and Poland and 23,187 wounded were transported.
A fourth train, organized for the Italian expeditionary forces in Russia, brought back
2,552 sick and wounded soldiers. Nine hundred soldiers who were retreating in a heavy snow
storm were taken on board to safety during one of the last voyages.
The Armistice, signed on September 8th 1943, obliged ACISMOM and the Military Corps
to intervene not only in the operation zones but also in the national territory devastated
by civil war and in the liberation zones. They strengthened the hospitals already existing
in Rome and Naples and the same happened in Turin and Milan.
The centres of assistance that were set up during those dramatic days were
countless. In the city of Rome alone there were 34, and to deal with such a vast
organization the Military Corps enrolled, thanks to its particular prerogatives, hundreds
and hundreds of young men who in that way escaped capture or forced labor camps. While
Italy was being liberated, they ran hospitals for the wounded, ex-servicemen and
ex-prisoners of war. The Banner of the Italian Association has been awarded a gold Medal
of Merit for health services, a silver one for military service, two bronze Medals and
numerous recognitions.
ACISMOM has been undergoing a renewal phase since 1986 thanks, initially, to Grand
Master, Fra' Angelo de Mojana. Today the Italian Association has numerous medical centres,
the most important of which is the Hospital of San Giovanni Battista alla Magliana on the
outskirts of Rome, for the rehabilitation of hemiplegic patients. A highly specialized
hospital and one of the few existing in Italy intended for the treatment of patients and
research in the sector. The development of this complex has been the constant concern of
the Office of the Receiver of the Common Treasure at the Grand Magistry, which has
assisted the Commissioners responsible over the years by promoting investments totaling
around eight billion Italian Liras from the Pergami Belluzzi Baldi Foundation. This
Foundation is more than ever present today at the hospital at the Magliana, where the
recently inaugurated laboratories of analysis and department of radiology are dedicated to
its good name.
During 1995 the Receiver of the Common Treasure, in line with the powers accorded to him
by Art. 179 of the Order of Malta Code and in full agreement with the President of the
Italian Association Don Giovan Pietro dei Duchi Caffarelli, organized the updating of the
computer systems in use by ACISMOM in order to make them compatible to link up with all
the other sanitary centres of the Order throughout the world.
The Italian Association of Knights runs several anti-diabetic centres and, in Rome, the
medical centre in Via Bocca di Leone within the same block as the Magistral Palace. For a
long time, the Grand Priory of Rome has had several centres dedicated to the collection of
medicines and assistance for the elderly. Recently, the Grand Priory has increased its
activity in the area, in favor of needy people.
To return to operations accomplished during wars and natural calamities, Italian Knights,
together with Knights from other European nations, rushed to Hungary in 1956 during the
revolution and the following Soviet occupation. Help was given to Polesine during the
floods and to Belice, Friuli and Irpinia where they assisted, with very good results, the
Order of Malta Italian Aid Corps (CISOM), a First Aid Organization which several other
Associations had also previously constituted. CISOM is integrated into the Italian Civil
Defense System.
The Association of German Knights set up field hospitals in Vietnam and the long
and bloody battle did not spare some of the men carrying the White eight pointed Cross who
there lost their lives.
The present organization of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta is not very different
from that during the Order's early centuries. The sovereignty of the Order is exercised by
the Prince and Grand Master who governs, together with the Sovereign Council which is
composed of four high charges: the Grand Commander, the Grand Chancellor, the Hospitaller
and the Receiver of the Common Treasure, together with four councilors and two alternates
elected by Chapter General from among the professed Knights, when and if available, i.e.,
among those who have taken the vows of Poverty, Chastity and Obedience. Chapter General is
the Supreme Assembly of Knights normally summoned every five years in order to elect the
members of Government. The Council Complete of State, on the summoned exclusively for the
election of the Grand Master. The two Assemblies are composed of the representatives of
the Grand Priories, the Priories and the National Associations.
The Master carries the title of both Eminence and Highness or Eminent Highness and is
universally recognized as a Head of State to whom all honors of a Sovereign are due.
The Supreme Pontiff appoints as his representative a Cardinal to
whom is given the name "Cardinalis Patronus" who is assisted by the Prelate of
the Order who is likewise appointed by the Holy Father. The Prelate is the Ecclesiastical
Superior of the Cler of the Order and assists the Grand Master in matters regarding
spirituality.
The life and activities of the Order are regulated by the Constitutional Charter and the
Code while particularly important juridical problems are submitted to the Juridical
Council. For any controversies not regarding Canon Law and the Ecclesiastical Court, the
Order has its own Court of the First Instance and Court of Appeal whose magistrates are
appointed directly by the Grand Master and the Sovereign Council. A Board of Auditors
controls financial and economic matters.
The Order has diplomatic relations with eighty countries with an exchange of Ambassadors.
Recently the Order has been admitted to the United Nations as a Permanent Observer.
Baron Marcello Maria Marrocco Trischitta prematurely deceased on February 29, 1996. On January 22, 1998 the reform of the Constitutional Charter and Code, approved by the Holy See with note of the Congregation of November 7, 1997, came into effect preceding the second edition of this book. The English version has been kindly revised by the Author's wife, Baroness Paola Marrocco Trischitta, Dame of Honor and Devotion, who thought it useful to integrate the text with the following appendix.
The renewal of the Order, desired by H.M.E.H. the Prince and Grand Master in view of
the third millennium, has gone ahead through very delicate actions both on international
and internal level.
The admission of the Order to the United Nations has increased the number of its bilateral
relations with other states up to 83. The National Associations are now 42 but what is
most amazing is the multiplication of the international missions of the Order in the
humanitarian field.
In the triennium 1996-1998 the Order was massively present during the conflicts in
Eastern Europe and, through the Italian Association, it was particularly active in Mostar.
The German Association provided humanitarian aid to the populations escaping from the war
zones of Iraq and Zaire and is currently in the front line helping Kosovo refugees through
its various voluntary bodies.
The relief corps have increased and on the occasion of the state visit of the Grand Master
to Cuba, the Order delivered medicines and medical equipment valued at 8 million US
dollars to the Cuban Caritas. The combined efforts of the Grand Chancellor, Count Carlo
Marullo di Condojanni, and the Grand Hospitaller, Baron Albrecht von Boeselager, have also
enabled the Order to achieve delicate goals in Eastern Europe and in Latin America, where
funds for the blind have been allocated. An agreement has been recently reached with the
São Paulo University for the research in the ophthalmic sector. In Guinea as well a
project for the treatment of Oncocerciasis is being carried out in collaboration with the
Spanish Association. Also the Bethlehem Hospital, which is the pride of the Order, has
been enlarged and modernized.
A museum has been created in Rhodes and in 1998 two great cultural events took place in
Italy: the former was an exhibition on Piranesi's works set up at our extraterritorial
seat on the Aventine and visited by over 43,000 persons; the latter was a very delicate
restoration of the inside and outside of the Grand Priory Palace in Venice. These events
are a clear demonstration of the renewed interest of the Order in the cultural aspects of
its history and this is certainly due to the economic resources that, for the first time
in the last ten years, have enabled the Order to make more investments for the safeguard
of its patrimony.
As far as the internal policy of the Order is concerned, the extraordinary Chapter
General approved the new Constitutional Charter which came into force on January 27,1998.
This event represents an epochal turning point in the life of the Order: the relations
with the Holy See have been revised, in particular expressly referring to international
law for the Order's diplomatic representation; specifying that also members of the First
and Second Class, who profess Vows and the Promise of Obedience respectively, are
subordinate only to their Superiors in the Order; attributing to the Grand Master the
confirmation of the election of Knights in Obedience to government positions. Thus, on a
legal level, there is no longer any kind of dependence on the Holy See, with a strong
emphasis on the already existing sovereign character of the Order's activities on the
international scene.
On a level of internal constitutional organization, Magistral Knights and Dames can now be
admitted to the Class of Obedience, the category of female Donats has been created and
different criteria for the recognition of a new kind of nobility are under study.
The jubilee Year, celebrating the Order's nine centuries of life, was opened in
Malta on December 5,1998 under the guidance of the Grand Chancellor, expressly entrusted
by the Grand Master with the co-ordination of the celebrations. On that occasion, a new
agreement on Fort St. Angelo was reached with the Maltese government, the ratification of
which is being concluded, extending the concession to 99 years with the enjoyment of
extraterritoriality and other privileges, including the possibility to keep in the Fort a
small uniformed corps to perform guard and security services. The flag of the Order is
already waving on this monument, which is the most significant evidence of the Knights'
presence on the Island.
Other numerous institutional changes are in progress and in order to understand and
appreciate their importance it will be necessary to wait for the future decisions of the
institutional bodies renewed during the Chapter General held on June 22-23,1999.
The Sovereign Order of Saint John of Jerusalem (the Order) came into being about the time of the Crusades. While continuing to retain the trappings of its religious origins, the Order appears to have evolved into a fraternal organization. After having had various headquarters in Europe and elsewhere since its founding in the eleventh century, the Order finally made its home in America during the early part of this century. At all times relevant to this lawsuit, the Orders headquarters have been in Pennsylvania. The history of the Order in America was uneventful until the 1950s, when Charles Pichel became its "Grand Chancellor." Pichel established the Corporation in 1956 to serve "as the historical and legal continuity" of the Order. Sovereign Order of Saint John of Jerusalem--Knights of Malta v. Messineo, 572 F.Supp. 983, 985 (E.D.Pa. 1983).
In this capacity, the Corporation, which was also controlled by Pichel until 1977, took steps to register the collective membership mark at the heart of this dispute: "Sovereign Order of Saint John of Jerusalem [Maltese Cross symbol] Knights of Malta [Maltese Cross symbol]." The Corporation registered the mark in 1958 and renewed it in 1977. The Trademark Trial and Appeals Board and a federal district court recently upheld the validity of the mark. Coleman v. Sovereign Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, Inc., Cancellation No. 14,038 (June 14, 1990), affd, No. 90-5301, 1993 WL 34987 (E.D.Pa. Feb. 9, 1993). Aside from controlling the collective membership mark, the Corporations chief functions have been to grant membership in the Order, maintain membership rolls, and enter into licensing agreements regarding the collective membership mark.
The present controversy stems from the Corporations exercise of its power to grant or deny these licenses. Between Pichels 1977 resignation and 1980 the Order was run by a "supreme council," which acted in concert with the Corporations board of directors. By admitting new members and expelling others, the supreme council completely changed its composition. Messineo, 572 F.Supp. at 986. Beginning in 1981, the Order required its members to obtain a license from the Corporation to use the collective membership mark on publications and other memorabilia. Predictably, members could not obtain a license without paying a substantial fee.
The defendant, John L. Grady, joined the Order in 1979 after having started the "American Christian Church and Order," which he hoped would become a legal affiliate of the Order. In 1982 Grady proposed to Salvatore T. Messineo, the President of the Corporation and Lieutenant Grand Master of the Order, that the Corporation issue a license for Gradys organization to use its trademark. Messineo denied the request because of Dr. Gradys alleged participation in para-military and white supremacist groups, and the Corporations board of directors expelled Grady from the Order in 1983. Despite his expulsion, the defendant continued to use the trademark, name, and other symbols of the Corporation and Order on, among other things, his letterhead and a newsletter that he published. He also claims to have represented the Order in such activities as signing a "Treaty of Amity" with a person alleged to be the exiled president of Poland. The defendant contends that his conduct was appropriate because the Corporation had been taken over and the Order ruined by several members of the Messineo family and that it was therefore "incumbent on a certain group of members of the Order, known as Hereditary Knights, to come forward and restore order." At a "Chapter General" meeting in 1991, this faction of "Hereditary Knights" purportedly elected the defendant to serve as the 75th Grand Master of the Order.
B.
The Corporation originally filed this Lanham Act suit in 1983 seeking a declaratory judgment that the defendant [John L. Grady], had infringed its registered trademark in violation of 15 U.S.C. § 1114. The district court stayed the action pending resolution of collateral litigation. Inexplicably, the Corporation did not move to lift the stay until 1994. On April 19, 1994, the Corporation finally filed an amended complaint and joined the Order as a co-plaintiff. In addition to Lanham Act claims for trademark infringement and false designation of origin, the amended complaint contained claims for RICO violations and Tennessee common law unfair competition. The defendant [John L. Grady] asserted three counterclaims based on his belief that the registration of the collective membership mark was fraudulently obtained and that the Orders leadership is illegitimate.
The district court granted summary judgment for the defendant [John L. Grady] on the RICO allegations and for the plaintiffs on all of the defendants [John L. Grady] counterclaims. More specifically, the court ruled as a matter of law that the collective membership mark is incontestable pursuant to 15 U.S.C. § 1065, and that there had been no fraud in its registration. A jury ultimately found that the defendant [John L. Grady] had knowingly infringed the collective membership mark in violation of 15 U.S.C. § 1114, had falsely designated the origin of the collective membership mark in violation of 15 U.S.C. § 1125, and had unfairly competed with the Corporation. Although the jury declined to award damages, the district court provided broad injunctive relief in a judgment entered on October 20, 1995.
The question most often raised is: how to distinguish between the genuine and false orders of St.John. The answer is simple.
The genuine orders are in the order of their establishment: The Sovereign Military Order of Malta, headed by its 78th Prince Grand Master His Most Eminent Highness Fra' Andrew Bertie; The Bailiwick of Brandenburg of the Knightly Order of St. John of the Hospital in Jerusalem, known as the Johanniter Order, headed by its Herrenmeister, H.R.H. Wilhelm Karl, Prince of Prussia; the Grand Priory of the Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem, of which H.M. Queen Elizabeth II is Sovereign Head and H.R.H. the Duke of Gloucester is Grand Prior; the Johanniterorder I Sverige, which is under the high protection of the King of Sweden and the Johanniter Orde in Nederland, under the protection of H.M. Queen Beatrix. All other self-styled chivalric groups which use the name of St. John in their appellation are, in my view spurious.
The next question most frequently asked concerns the criteria used to determine the authenticity of an order of St. John.
One of the reasons why the question is difficult to answer is that the United States has no chivalric tradition and maintains no official government entity empowered to set criteria to determine the historicity and validity of orders of chivalry. The IRS can and does grant tax-exempt status to bona-fide charitable and non-profit organizations. Thus, in the United States any legally-constituted, but not necessarily historically authentic association or sodality can take on the trappings of chivalry, add St. John to its name and, so long as it is not involved in fraudulent activity, obtain tax-exempt status if it meets the relatively simple requirements. Thus, it is up to the Most Venerable Order to set its own guidelines to evaluate the authenticity of an order of St. John. These guidelines are:
1) The order maintains a proven uncorrupted historical and traditional link with the original Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem founded in A.D. 1099 or
2) The Order is under the protection of a reigning sovereign and/or is recognized as a chivalric order by the ruling government of the country where it is seated.
Note:- In addition to fulfilling the two criteria mentioned above, the Sovereign Military Order of Malta is a case apart as it is itself a sovereign entity in international law which maintains diplomatic relations with fifty-one countries.
It is also a religious order of the Roman Catholic Church under the Holy See.
Many of the groups cited herein claim either "royal" or "spiritual" protection. It must be stated that for protection to have any validity under international law it must be offered by a sovereign state or by a reigning monarch. Some scholars extend the privilege of granting protection to an ex-reigning monarch whose rights of. fons honorum, they affirm, are permanent and valid even in exile. The point is highly contested. Reputable experts agree that a junior prince of a former sovereign house who has not reigned cannot provide valid protection. Neither does "spiritual protection" offered by the primate of an autocephalous church have any validity under international law.

The Jan. 12 2000 issue of Zenit: [TRUE KNIGHTS]
KNIGHTS OF MALTA ASSIST JUBILEE PILGRIMS
Order's Grand Master Receives Ambassadors from 85 States
ROME, JAN 11 (ZENIT).- Ambassadors from 85 States met this morning in Rome, at the
headquarters of the Sovereign Order of Malta on the Aventine Hill, to participate in the
Diplomatic Corps' audience with the Grand Master, Friar Andrew Bertie, to exchange good
wishes for the new year.
Following a well-established tradition, the Grand Master made a summary of the main events
in the Order's life over the past year, giving general lines of activity for the future,
including special attention to
the Jubilee celebration. The Knights of Malta have prepared a precise and very well
articulated program of assistance to pilgrims in need of emergency health care. Many of
the Knights will work as volunteers in
Rome during the Jubilee Year.
Last year, the Order of Malta celebrated its 900th anniversary. It has organized meetings
and pilgrimages to commemorate periods of its history, from Malta to Rhodes and ending in
Rome. Over the past year,
the Knights Roman headquarters have been visited by many heads of State, including King
Juan Carlos of Spain.
"The international community is committed today in various areas to reach the
objectives of pacification and liberation from need and suffering, which constantly
challenge the conscience of civil societies," Andrew Bertie said. The Order wishes to
make its contribution to this process, given its special charisms: the defense of faith
through witness, not the sword, and service to the poor.
The Knights of Malta are present in over 100 countries worldwide, through their own
international organizations, foundations, and coordination centers. The Order's
humanitarian action is carried out in
more than 100 of its hospitals and thousands of out-patient clinics. Over the past few
years the Order has increased its assistance to victims of natural disasters and armed
conflicts, by creating care centers for refugees, rural hospitals, and distributing
medicines and first aid. In order to implement this work, it counts on the assistance of
40 rescue groups that coordinate 80,000 permanent volunteers in different crisis zones.
The Sovereign Military and Hospitaler Order of St. John of Jerusalem was created in
1099 to care for pilgrims and patients in Jerusalem. The Order's Rule, confirmed by
Pope Paschal II (1113) served as a model for other Hospitaler Orders. After the fall of
Jerusalem in 1187, the Order established itself in St. John of Acre (1285-1291).
When that city was taken by the Muslims, the Order sought refuge in Cyprus (1291) and
controlled the island of Rhodes (1308-1522), as a result of which they were known as the
Knights of Rhodes. Following the conquest of the Island, Charles V ceded Malta to them
(1530-1798). After losing this Island first to Napoleon (1798) and then to Great Britain
(1800), the Order was reorganized in the 19th century in Italy. Today its sovereignty is
recognized by 85 States. In honor of its 900th anniversary, Malta ceded a
historic castle on the island to the order.
